My motivation to run the Boston Marathon, which is the worlds oldest and most prestigious, was provided by my colleague Vijay Bhagirath who had given me an explanation of the goals of The Pray Foundation. Vijay made me realise that I should use the opportunity to provide a small amount of publicity and fund-raising for this valuable charity rather than simply completing another personal objective.
The day of the Marathon was very cold, wet, and windy but there was a very good spirit amongst the competitors as we waited in the small town of Hopkinton for the start. With over 20,000 participants and over 100 years of experience Boston Marathon is a large enterprise but retains the original spirit of marathon running as a personal challenge for most competitors while the elite runners go for personal bests and prizes.
The city of Boston really enters into the spirit of the event both during and after the event with parties for the participants and their families as well as very good media coverage. The day after the event Boston is filled with runners in their new Boston Marathon jackets and everyone takes to opportunity to chat about their race.
Overall it was a very enjoyable event and I was happy to be able to help Vijay and his charity in a small way and would strongly recommend this or another marathon to anyone who enjoys a personal challenge that can be combined with a more meaningful charitable effort.
