Education

Promoting and aiding free basic education is one of the key focus areas of PRAY.
"Education is the great hope for the survival of humankind and for the forward progress of civilization." That statement could not be truer, The French revolutionary Danton said more than two centuries ago, "After bread, education."

Education is the most basic necessity after those that are vital to life itself--food, clothing, and shelter. The truth is that all people have a right to have these basic needs fulfilled, and they also have a right to education. In this regard, the world is not doing very well.

More than 836 million adults in the developing world are illiterate, according to surveys by UNESCO. Around the world, one of every eight children is not enrolled in primary school, and more than one third of adolescents are not in high school. "Poverty has many roots, but the tap root is ignorance.". Education tends to remove this ignorance.

While everyone has a contribution to make in furthering our educational progress, basic education is a fundamental right, and it is the responsibility of governments to provide it. Quite simply, we are not investing enough in education. Instead of preparing them for the twenty-first century, we are sending them back to the nineteenth century. We can do much better than this.

The problem is with resource allocation in developing countries. With a lot of development needed and the lacking infrastructure, Shortage of training personnel, many nations tend to ignore education knowingly or unknowingly. Education, which serve as a building block in the development of nation. Obviously more funds and resources needs to be diverted to education. That’s where PRAY and organization like PRAY come into picture. That’s where people and individual are needed to contribute to the society.

Education is also necessary for the social development of any society. It empowers an individual to understand and implement the good of human behavior. It teaches equality between genders and works on the abolishment of petty differences like gender, caste, creed religion and geographies.

PRAY’s India chapter has embarked on a ambitious project to provide education to as many individual as possible. Please read more about it in PRAY INDIA PROJECT.

Environment conservation and protection.
With the advent of industrial revolution and the increasing population of the world, the natural resources are fast depleting. An expanding global population, rapid conversion of critical habitat to other uses, and the spread of invasive species to non-native habitats pose a serious threat to the world's natural resources and to all of us who depend on them for food, fuel, shelter and medicine.

Policies that distort markets and provide incentives for unsustainable development intensify the problem. Every year, there is a net loss of 22 million acres of forest area worldwide. Every year, toxic chemicals, some capable of traveling thousands of miles from their source and lasting decades in the environment, are released into the earth's atmosphere.

As the demand like water and clean fresh air increases with increasing population and industrial development, the need to conserve these resources become all the more important. PRAY works in the area of water conservation and management and afforestation.

Clean drinking water is the basic need of every individual. Nature has its strange ways of giving us the message of preserving of resource. Water is one resource that if not preserved can lead to loss of Human life. PRAY works to help people in efficiently manage their water resources and installing new resources of water like Tube wells.

Trees another natural resource are fast depleting again because of the industrial development and increasing population. Rampant deforestation can have an adverse impact on the environment and the total climatic condition on the whole. It is necessary to strike a balance between industrial development and environment. PRAY’s plans to take massive “Tree Plantation drive” involving people from the society to participate in the conservation of the environment.

Primary Health Care

Recognizing the importance of Health in the process of economic and social development and improving the quality of life of our citizens, is the prime responsibility of every government.

Developing nation are short of resources and funds to provide basic health care to its citizen. Many developing countries are not adequately delivering basic health care services, including medicines, to their populations.

Countries need functioning public health systems to get health care services and medicines to the sick. There are fewer than three doctors per 10,000 people in many developing countries. Storage and distribution systems are nonexistent or are poorly managed, resulting in significant losses of medicines. World Bank estimates that for every $100 spent by some governments on drugs, only $12 worth of medicines reaches patients. Health facilities are often located in urban areas, far away from rural populations most in need, or are not accessible to large numbers of the population via public transportation.

Fundamental economic, social and political issues in many developing nations impede access to health care services and medicines. Impassable roads and weak transportation systems block patients, providers and medicines from reaching health facilities. Lack of clean water and sewage treatment and overcrowded housing spread diseases.

PRAY currently is engaged in re-habilitation of some handicapped patients in addition to providing medical aid and financial support for medical treatment. As part of an ambitious initiative by PRAY India Chapter, plans have been put in place to set up and run a primary health care centre which will provide free basic medical aid to poor and under privileged. PRAY will mobilize resources to run mobile medical clinics to bring the free medical care to the remote parts in the rural areas. If you have any suggestion please click here for feedback. Self Sufficiency

There is an old saying by Robert Louis Stevenson – Give me a fish, I eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I eat for a lifetime. This is the underlying belief and motivation of PRAY to work diligently in supporting activities and programmes dedicated to promote self sufficiency. PRAY has been active in this area and has provided means of self sufficiency to many in the last one year.

This is also demonstrated in the commitment PRAY has accorded to this key area by incorporating a Vocational Training Workshop in its ambitious PRAY INDIA PROJECT. Please click here to read more about it.
